All this article convinced me of is that energy monopolies might actually be a good thing.

Because apparently they're the only way to get nuclear plants restarted in the US.

A tangent, but the US spends only 200 billion a year on power generation? For all industry, every household, every street lamp, everything? That's crazy, I had no idea, you hear the government throw much bigger numbers out there about wars and Ukraine and Israel assistance and all that, to think we send Ukraine multiple times what we spend on power for the whole country. That's absolutely wild to me.

What you "hear" is people making noises to the effect that the Ukraine war is much more costly than it actually is. If your first reaction is as to how "absolutely wild" this sounds, that's because that's exactly the reaction their noises are intended to provoke.

According to https://www.ukraineoversight.gov/Funding/, aid to Ukraine has been only $174.2 billion over the course of about 2.5 years.
