I wonder if spacex will always be private. Amazing that such a company didn’t need public financing.

What’s the purpose of an IPO these days?

SpaceX alone got a whopping $2.8 billion in government contracts last year, and has gotten a total of $15.3 billion from the government since 2003.

Along with the money SpaceX has been awarded by the US government, the company requested an $885 million subsidy for its Starlink satellite broadband service to serve rural communities, but was denied by the Federal Communications Commission. The company has since appealed that decision.

Those numbers are smaller than what public companies are typically getting in this industry though over the years.

~$12B in investment plus ~$30B in lifetime revenue of which $15B is from the US government. Mars is not cheap.

It seems like the purpose of an IPO is now to dump on retail after the company has peaked. Or maybe that's just SPACs.
